Winter Layering
WHY LAYER?
To maintain focus solely on the hunt without being distracted by the changing weather or physical activity, hunters rely on a well-designed layering clothing system. This system allows them to conquer any challenges that Mother Nature presents throughout the day. Generally, a three-layer system, is preferred to manage perspiration, insulation and protection from rain, wind & snow with the ability to add and remove layers as needed. By using multiple layers, hunters can easily adjust their attire to accommodate the shifting weather conditions, such as cold mornings and warmer afternoons, and their physical exertion level, such as actively stalking or silently glassing.
Base layers using moisture-wicking fabrics, keep the skin dry by drawing perspiration away from the body, preventing those annoying shivers. Insulating mid-layers trap body heat to provide warmth in colder temperatures, while outer layers offer protection against wind, rain, and snow. A layering system also enables hunters to remove or add layers as needed, allowing them to maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the day. We’ve put together a handy guide for each layer to help you create your own layered clothing system.
THERMAL LAYER
For very cold environments, Thermaflow thermals can be worn under your base layer for next to skin insulation.

The base layer is your foundation in layering and is worn next to the skin. With two core performance functions, an effective base will regulate your body temperature while managing perspiration by wicking moisture away from the skin. A base layer can be utilised year round, with different styles, features and fabric weights each suited for a specific climate.

Gear Comparison Guide
Not all gear is created the same. With different technical strengths, materials, intended uses and seasons, treatments and features, finding the gear that suits your needs can be confusing.
Here’s a simplified comparison to help you pick the best gear to GET OUTSIDE.
INSULATED JACKET
Maximising comfort and insulation from extreme weather, Spika’s insulated jackets are specifically crafted to preserve body heat in extremely cold conditions. Armed for performance in the field with baffled wind-proofing and water resistance, an insulated jacket is perfect when glassing a cold valley or tackling the snow line. Options include Responsibly Sourced Duck (RSD) Down (Spika Terra Puffer Jacket) or 3M Synthetic Fill (Spika Chase Puffer Jacket). These jackets achieve insulation by effectively capturing heat and creating a layer of air pockets between your outer and middle layers. Both jacket options can be packed down and compressed conserving vital pack space.
SHELL JACKET
Waterproof hard shells are the extreme weather outer layer, providing maximum protection from heavy rain and strong wind. You should select your outer shell jacket based on factors such as your terrain, weather conditions and hunting style. While remaining lightweight and providing water protection, shell layers also help retain body heat. Once a downpour ceases, utilise heat dumping features to regulate your temperature. Packed with technical features, Spika’s range of waterproof jackets will give you ability to extend your hunting trips and endure more challenging conditions.
PERFORMANCE JACKET
Performance outer jackets are the perfect all-season versatile hunting outer layer. Designed with function in mind, performance based jackets can be used for any hunting style and skill level. Breathable, windproof and water resistant protection complete a comfortable all-season garment worn over the base layer in warmer weather conditions or over the mid layer as an outer soft shell when the mercury drops.
