Chasing The Last Croak

Chasing The Last Croak LOGO

Follow heavy hitting bow hunter, Brett Meldrum as he invites us to his playground in the hills of central western New South Wales to hunt the tail-end of the fallow rut. The boys capture an authentic hunters account of what it means to manage land and why we hunt, in a pristine vision of the Australian landscape. “The Last Croak” is the latest hunting film by Spika, filmed, directed & produced by NZ’s award-winning Thomas Greenaway.

Bow hunting adds an extra layer of challenge to the pursuit, requiring stealth, precision, and an understanding of animal behaviour. As an experienced bow hunter, Brett pulls all his skills together (along with a piece of vacuum hose) to track the end of the fallow rut.
What’s the best way to get outside in the breathtaking Australian landscape? By Chasing the Last Croak…

SOLE LAYER Zamberlan Storm GTX CF Spika Alpine Socks

As a base layer in the field in our Winter months, I wear the Thermaflow pants. These are warm and have plenty of stretch. The moisture wicking material makes them dry and easy to wear. Matching this I have the Thermaflow Top. The Spika socks keep my feet warm and super comfy in my boots. They have plenty of flex and beefed-up points where the main wear and impact would occur. They’re also quick drying and flexible. My mid layer consists of the Xone Pants and the Guide Lightweight Top. These pants have plenty of stretch and allow for good movement in the field. When walking long distance or in steep country, the side vented zip areas help dispense the heat quickly. Having front, side and rear pockets there are plenty of places to store the things you need at arm’s reach. The Guide light top is my favourite. This top has plenty of ventilation and allows full movement in the field. In South Australia, the Summer and Spring months are quite warm here, making this top usable all year round.

As for my top layer, I love the Go Classic Hoodie, but I have a new favourite in the Highpoint Shell Jacket. The warmth and comfort of this jacket is second to none. The pockets are generous on the front chest and two pockets at the waist area. The under-arm pit zips are great when pushing hard for dumping heat. The hood on the jacket gives extra protection against wind and rain too. When the weather turns south and your miles from the Ute, I have the Buckland Jacket in my pack to throw over, especially because it’s 100% waterproof and breathable, lightweight and easy to carry, it’s a must in the pack during Winter. At camp after a days hunting just sitting around the fire or making dinner. A good puffer jacket like Chase Puffer. Both have there place at camp. I am wearing the Zamberlan Storm GTX CF, these boots are light weight at only 550 grams. I am super impressed by these boots, particularly as they are waterproof and hard wearing. They are super comfy, I would recommend these to anyone. I walk long kilometres in the field, so I need good reliable footwear.

OUTER LAYER // SHELL Frontier Jacket Frontier Pants

For my base layer on these cold winter days here in the central tablelands a good set of thermal bottoms is a must. Especially with the wet frosty mornings, no one enjoys getting wet at the start of the day especially when its -3 degrees. My go to thermal pants are the Thermaflow Pants. These pants have moisture-wicking properties which is a must during the winter months! As for my base layer top I love the Gridfleece Top, the Gridfleece Top is great at distributing body heat and is a very comfortable top to wear under a jacket. I really like the length of the top and the material its made of especially the way it hugs your body. These items are perfect for your high country deer hunts to chasing wild pigs on the western flats. For my mid layer pants I’m a huge fan of the Xone Pants, these pants are a all-season pant for me with great features such as the shoelace clip, nothing annoys me more than pant bottoms that ride up all the time. With the shoelace clips this doesn’t happen. Another great feature on the pants is the side zip vents which allow you to regulate the heat in the pants, with many pockets and built in belt make these pants definitely my number choice.
Image
Image
For my top layer I run the Highpoint Shell Jacket. This is my favourite jacket in the range purely because of its many features. The pit zips are a big one for me as it allows me to quickly dump heat out if I’m starting to sweat, the last thing you want is to get wet from the inside as this can drastically affect your body. For the cold mornings sitting on top of a hill glassing or back at camp that night I wear the Terra Puffer Jacket, it’s a great addition especially in windy conditions, the adjustable hood is also a great function. When things turn wet I always have my Frontier Jacket and Pants in my pack. The Frontier jacket and pants are 100% waterproof and breathable and with added features such as grip on the shoulders is great to keep your pack from sliding. No matter where I’m going in winter I make sure I always have my rain gear especially in the high country as the weather can change very dramatically.

Winter Layering

Spika Layering Guide

WHY LAYER?

To maintain focus solely on the hunt without being distracted by the changing weather or physical activity, hunters rely on a well-designed layering clothing system. This system allows them to conquer any challenges that Mother Nature presents throughout the day. Generally, a three-layer system, is preferred to manage perspiration, insulation and protection from rain, wind & snow with the ability to add and remove layers as needed. By using multiple layers, hunters can easily adjust their attire to accommodate the shifting weather conditions, such as cold mornings and warmer afternoons, and their physical exertion level, such as actively stalking or silently glassing.

Image
Spika Layering Graphic

Base layers using moisture-wicking fabrics, keep the skin dry by drawing perspiration away from the body, preventing those annoying shivers. Insulating mid-layers trap body heat to provide warmth in colder temperatures, while outer layers offer protection against wind, rain, and snow. A layering system also enables hunters to remove or add layers as needed, allowing them to maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the day. We’ve put together a handy guide for each layer to help you create your own layered clothing system.

THERMAL LAYER

For very cold environments, Thermaflow thermals can be worn under your base layer for next to skin insulation.

BASE LAYER

The base layer is your foundation in layering and is worn next to the skin. With two core performance functions, an effective base will regulate your body temperature while managing perspiration by wicking moisture away from the skin. A base layer can be utilised year round, with different styles, features and fabric weights each suited for a specific climate.

MID LAYER

The second level of defense is a mid layer, worn on top of your base layer to improve insulation and dramatically increase comfort in cold conditions. Fleece backed material used in Spika mid-layers include a low profile Basefleece for maximum comfort and a heavier Heatfleece that is weather resistant for all-season protection. Both fabrics maintain breathability whilst providing a layer of heat insulation.

Gear Comparison Guide

Spika Comparison Guide

Not all gear is created the same. With different technical strengths, materials, intended uses and seasons, treatments and features, finding the gear that suits your needs can be confusing.
Here’s a simplified comparison to help you pick the best gear to GET OUTSIDE.

INSULATED JACKET

Maximising comfort and insulation from extreme weather, Spika’s insulated jackets are specifically crafted to preserve body heat in extremely cold conditions. Armed for performance in the field with baffled wind-proofing and water resistance, an insulated jacket is perfect when glassing a cold valley or tackling the snow line. Options include Responsibly Sourced Duck (RSD) Down (Spika Terra Puffer Jacket) or 3M Synthetic Fill (Spika Chase Puffer Jacket). These jackets achieve insulation by effectively capturing heat and creating a layer of air pockets between your outer and middle layers. Both jacket options can be packed down and compressed conserving vital pack space.
